Vandy and Gators win

Pretty good way to start of the first weekend of college football!

Unfortunately I was unable to watch the Vandy game. Headed down to Sneakers at the beach after calling and asking if they had ESPNU(was told they did), only to find out when I get there that they arent showing it. what made it even worse was I asked the president of the local Vandy alumni to tell all the other vandy grads that I was watching the game at Sneakers. whoops! hope nobody showed up.

anyways, all sec QB Cutler had a huge game. 276 yards passing. 89 yards rushing. Led the offense on a game winning touchdown drive with under 2 minutes to go.

the new starter at RB Jeff Jennings averaged more than 5 yards a carry, but only ran it 8 times.

first time theyve won the season opener in the bobby johnson era. first time in 8 years.

and even more amazing, it looked like Wake was going to drive down for the winning score leaving vandy to suffer another heart breaking collapse of a defeat. but this time the defense rose to the occasion and said Hell No!

i cant remember the last time Vandy played so aggressively on offense and defense. i think we were all hoping the coaches would see how effective the offense was last year against tennessee throwing the ball all over the field.

the only real negative was the defense allowing 254 yards to some nobody RB micah andrews. just wait until they play tennessee.

anyways great win!

the urban meyer era kicked off with a win over wyoming. probably wasnt the triumphant blowout that many hoped for. but was a win nonetheless.

the offense definitely was sluggish at time. and its yet to be proved that Leak is comfortable carrying the ball.

more importantly though the defense seemed to play with more aggression and looked a lot better. looks as though all that time trying to instill some toughness has worn off.

next week they get a cupcake in la tech. and then the first big game for meyer. tennesssee.

Mexicans: "They suck"

Landon Donovan is now my second favorite player on the men's national soccer team behind my boy Eddie Johnson of Bunnell, FL!

'Donovan said the Mexicans were jealous of the U.S., always out to humiliate them and he wanted to make them feel miserable.

After Saturday's match, Donovan was in no more conciliatory mood.

"They suck," he said. "I'm so happy. After we got that first goal they were never in the game. Hopefully that will shut them up for the next three or four years." '

hahaha...

btw, the mens national team has officially qualified for the 2006 World Cup. While its nice that theyve officially made it, was there ever any doubt?

Only one of my draft picks didnt make a 53 man roster...

So far so good with my 2005 draft pick. All of my draft picks made 53 man rosters except for one, Fred Gibson. I remember early in his career there was talk of him being a lock as a first day draft pick and maybe even a first rounder.

Look how far he has fallen. Steelers take him in the 4th round only to cut him a couple days ago. Have not heard why they made the decision but it came as a big surprise to me. The one steelers preseason game I watched Gibson looked pretty good. Caught everything thrown his way. And with the departure of Plaxico, I thought they would be in need of a big receiver.

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is maybe Gibson's heart wasnt in it. I remember when he was a frosh or soph at Georgia reading an interview of his where he said he only played football because he was good at it but his love was basketball. Also, I remember watching report about how NFL teams take different approaches at the combine. Teams like the Giants ask players all sorts of reason/logic questions to determine intelligence while the Steelers didnt ask many at all. And the one thing they tried to learn of all players they interviewed was how much they loved football. Maybe that had something to do with the decision to cut him.

Anyways, enough about Gibson. Here are my other draft picks and the teams whose roster they made.

Mark Clayton - Baltimore
Channing Crowder - Miami
Ciatrick Fason - Minnesota
Gerald Sensabaugh - Jacksonville
Jovan Haye - Carolina
Rob Petitti - Dallas
Adam Bergen - Arizona

How often do you see 6th and 7th rounders make the final cuts for NFL teams? And all three of mine did!
